Bonfiglioli: A Future-Ready Core for a Future-Driven Business

While they expertly deliver innovation and quality to their customers, Callaway Golf’s previous planning and reporting tool wasn’t making the cut. To evolve their enterprise, the sports giant decided to replace their outdated planning software with SAP Analytics Cloud for planning.

Together with Avvale, Callaway Golf successfully implemented SAP Analytics Cloud across their global enterprise in just 6 months. Now, Callaway Golf has a single, consolidated planning solution that has enabled streamlined expense and asset plans so they can focus on what they do best– revolutionizing the sporting world with cutting edge equipment.

Bonfiglioli S.p.A., a leading name in industrial automation since 1956, is headquartered in Bologna, Italy, and operates in over 80 countries through 23 commercial branches and 18 production sites. Its three core Business Units: Discrete Manufacturing & Process Industries, Motion & Robotics, and Mobility & Wind Industries, serve a diverse range of sectors, specializing in power transmission and motion control. The company's mission emphasizes excellence, innovation, and sustainability, aiming to keep the world in motion through smart, efficient, and future-ready solutions.

The Challenge

Before engaging with Avvale, Bonfiglioli was operating on a legacy SAP system that had become increasingly difficult and costly to manage across its global footprint. The internal IT team was heavily involved in infrastructure maintenance, limiting their ability to focus on innovation and strategic initiatives. As the company expanded, the need for a more agile and scalable ERP platform became urgent to support global harmonization and operational efficiency. The existing system lacked the flexibility to adapt quickly to evolving business needs and technological advancements. Bonfiglioli wanted to reduce its total cost of ownership while ensuring continuous access to the latest capabilities. The company was also looking to shift from a traditional ownership model to a subscription-based approach that would exempt them from infrastructure responsibilities.

Just as important, Bonfiglioli needed a trusted partner who could translate a vision of digital transformation into an actionable, value-driven roadmap.

The Approach

Avvale guided Bonfiglioli through a complete transformation strategy to enable a future-ready digital core that supports innovation, sustainability, and long-term competitiveness. To achieve this, Bonfiglioli embarked on a global migration to SAP Cloud ERP via the RISE with SAP program. Avvale designed and executed a phased, agile transformation roadmap that addressed the company’s complex operational landscape while aligning with its strategic priorities. The project spanned nine months, covering all Bonfiglioli’s global subsidiaries. A multidisciplinary team was deployed to ensure a smooth transition, with a strong focus on minimizing disruption and maintaining business continuity. The solution was hosted on Amazon Web Services (AWS), enabling scalability, performance, and access to advanced services.

The collaboration emphasized agility, transparency, and co-design, ensuring that every step of the journey was aligned with Bonfiglioli’s long-term goals.

The Challenge

Before integrating SAP Analytics Cloud, Callaway Golf's planning landscape centered around SAP's legacy planning solution, Business Planning and Simulation (BPS). While BPS met Callaway Golf's planning needs for many years, the enterprise began to experience limitations with their old solution:

  • Disconnected plans across the board: As Callaway Golf expanded and acquired new brands, planning processes greatly differed across the enterprise with some business units using Excel spreadsheets and others using legacy solutions for planning.
  • Outdated planning functionalities: The existing legacy planning solution lacked many modern functionalities. Among them, salary calculations and asset depreciation automation needed improvement. As a result, it became difficult to create detailed and accurate forecasts across the globe.
  • Significant IT support: The legacy solution required continuous management from IT to maintain runtime. IT had to carve out a full day every week to manually maintain the solution.
  • No single source of truth: Various departments and brands used different data sources, which led to data silos across the organization, making it difficult to gain a clear picture of the enterprise's planned expenses.
  • Rigid user interface: Legacy forecasting system was difficult to navigate and lacked working functions and calculations across the board, such as planning on depreciation and existing assets, adding vendors or members on the fly, and breaking down their cost center expense planning forecasts.

The Approach

With Avvale experts on their side, Callaway Golf laid out the following goals for their new planning landscape with SAP Analytics Cloud:

  • Crowdsource and consolidate plans across the enterprise to gain a global overview of their planned expenses and expand the input capabilities to each responsible owner.
  • Leverage elevated planning functionalities to create faster and more accurate forecast cost center expense and asset reports. The ability to customize calculations enhances and automates the reporting metrics.
  • Harness the power of self-service analytics to alleviate IT from the burden of simple maintenance and data entry requests, so they can focus on high-ROI tasks.
  • Maximize user-driven admin capabilities to control the management of calculations and forms.
  • Create new KPls driven by the business needs.

When SEM-BPS was the center of Callaway Golf's planning landscape, flexibility was a huge factor that was missing. SAP Analytics Cloud contains powerful scenario planning capabilities that help organizations quickly uncover actionable insights to make data-driven decisions. For Callaway Golf, SAP Analytics Cloud's modern planning functionalities provided users with the ability to:

  • Add members on the fly
  • Plan on existing as well as planned assets and automatically calculate the depreciation of values
  • Test "what-if" scenarios for deeper analysis by creating private versions of plans
  • Customize the solution based on their current business process
  • Perform driver-based calculations
  • Empower users to execute end-to-end planning scenarios, without the help of IT

The Impact

Today, Bonfiglioli operates with a leaner, smarter, and more agile digital core, liberating internal teams to focus on innovation and strategic growth. By adopting a subscription-based model through RISE with SAP, the company lowered its total cost of ownership and eliminated the need to manage infrastructure internally. The project was completed on time across all global subsidiaries, ensuring business continuity and minimal disruption.

Operational efficiency improved through real-time data access and streamlined processes, while business users benefited from a modernized experience via SAP Fiori interfaces. Bonfiglioli is now positioned to scale its digital capabilities, since IT teams now have the flexibility to drive forward-looking initiatives. In fact, the company is set to launch SAP Digital Manufacturing at its Bologna plant in early 2026 and is actively exploring SAP Joule to bring generative AI into supply chain and production optimization, this positions Bonfiglioli to lead in an increasingly competitive industrial landscape.

Sustainability goals were supported by moving to a cloud infrastructure, reducing the environmental footprint associated with on-premises systems. This transformation laid the foundation for a more agile, resilient, and future-ready enterprise.
